EDF wins big in latest renewables auctions in FranceDF has been awarded a whopping 105 megawatts (MW) of solar projects as a part of France’s second renewable auction this year. The October auction round, which was held by the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), also awarded 9.4 MW to EDF ENR, a subsidiary of EDF, meaning that the company raked in a total of 114 MW of projects out of 332 MW of solar on offer. The capacity will be split between 12 solar PV projects in six regions; Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Centre-Val de Loire, Grand Est, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire. The round also awarded 258 MW of wind, after vetting 68 solar and wind proposals for a total of 590 MW of capacity awarded
|
CRE’s first round of auctions in April this year awarded 749.3 MW of onshore wind and 649 MW of ground-based solar PV projects – more than double the amount of capacity that was awarded in the October round. The decrease in awarded capacity in the second award round this year can be attributed to the modified format of the October auction, as the round was split into two sessions to accommodate COVID-19 disruptions. The October round, which was the first of these two sessions, allowed certain projects to apply as soon as the country’s state of emergency was lowered, while an additional round later this year will grant more preparation time to less advanced applicants.

Colombian renewables set to skyrocket to 6.4 GW with upcoming auctionThe energy transition wave has hit Colombia’s shores as the government recently announced a second round of renewable energy auctions to take place in 1Q21. As a result, operational utility PV and wind capacity will explode from less than 200 megawatts (MWAC) in 2019 to an incredible 6.4 gigawatts (GWAC) by the end of 2022. The new auctions follow the first successful round of auctions in October 2019, which awarded 1.3 GWAC of utility PV and wind. Ambitions the second time around are even higher, with over 5 GWAC of capacity on offer. Winning projects must be online by the December 2022, and Rystad Energy sees that wind and PV developers are flocking to the north eastern region of the country. Indeed, the three northern most states – La Guajira, Cesar and Atlantico – account for over 50% of Colombia’s total wind and solar PV development pipeline. First auction round sees gigawatts of proposals, boosting development pipeline to 23.2 GWAC

Africa to see a huge renewable energy boom driven by Egypt and AlgeriaRenewable energy capacity in Africa is set to nearly quadruple from 13 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind in 2019 to 50 GW in 2025, led by growth from Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Ethiopia. Development on the continent has historically been slow thanks to political instability, lagging policy and infrastructure, and poor procurement. However, as domestic electricity demand increases, many African nations are turning to renewable solutions to meet energy targets, with solar overtaking wind in the next five years as the renewable technology of choice.
|
At present, South Africa leads the continent in terms of installed renewable energy capacity with 3.5 GW of wind, 2.4 GW of utility solar, and a solar dominant 1 GW pipeline of projects in development. Egypt and Morocco are in second and third place in terms of solar capacity with 1.6 GW and 0.8 GW respectively. A cohort of new countries is expected to see significant solar growth in the next five years, including Algeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Tunisia, Cote D’ Ivoire, Mali, Djibouti, and the Democratic republic of Congo.

Highlights from Renewable Energy Trends Report November 2020 This year remains on track to see 140 GW of capacity installed by year-end, a potential rise of nearly 34% over 2019. However, much still hinges on 4Q, as 65 GW of capacity remains under construction and could still be energized this year. In a separate display of rising momentum, new project announcements totaled 40 GW in October, up 53% from September, dominated by wind (61%) ahead of solar (20%) and storage (19%, including hydrogen). Last month saw the award of 1.3 GWAC in four auction rounds that took place in Germany and France. An additional four auctions closed in Turkey, Ecuador and Hungary, but results are only expected around the turn of the year. We are currently tracking global planned auctions, with Colombia scheduling auctions for 5 GW in October, bringing total capacity scheduled to be auctioned to 55 GW. In the remainder of 2020, seven countries will hold additional renewable auctions, putting 16.3 GWAC of capacity on offer. See Gero Farruggio's, Head of Global Renewables, present key take aways from this months Renewable Energy Trends Report in the video below.
